The biggest mistake families make when booking a rental car is going purely by seat count. A car that technically fits five people can still leave you fighting to close the boot over three suitcases and a stroller. Here’s how to think about it properly.
Couples and two-person trips
A compact hatchback or economy sedan is usually plenty — easy to park in narrow old-town streets in Limassol or Paphos, cheap on fuel, and more than enough boot space for two people’s luggage.
Families of three to four
This is where a mid-size sedan or small SUV earns its keep. You get proper legroom for two adults in the back, ISOFIX points for child seats, and — critically — enough boot space for suitcases plus a beach bag, buggy or cool box without playing luggage Tetris at the airport.
Families of five or more, or two families travelling together
A larger SUV or a minivan-style 7-seater is worth the extra cost. Beyond fitting everyone comfortably, these give you the flexibility to fold seats down for extra luggage on the way to the airport, or to carry watersports gear, a foldable pushchair and shopping from a supermarket run all at once.
Don’t forget luggage volume, not just seats
A general rule: one large suitcase plus one carry-on per adult is the realistic test, not the seatbelt count. If you’re arriving on a long-haul flight with checked luggage for four, a car rated for five passengers may still feel cramped — sizing up one category usually solves this cleanly.
Child seats and boosters
