Some of the best experiences in Cyprus happen through the windscreen, not at the destination. If you enjoy driving for its own sake, these are the routes to build a day around.
The Akamas coastal track
Starting past Lara Bay on the northwest tip of the island, this partly unpaved route hugs dramatic cliffs and empty coves with barely another car in sight. It’s rough enough that a higher-clearance vehicle is genuinely recommended, but the reward is some of the wildest coastal scenery in the Mediterranean, largely untouched by development.
The Troodos wine route
Looping through the Krasochoria (“wine villages”) northwest of Limassol — Omodos, Vasa, Kilani and Pera Pedi — this route winds through terraced vineyards and stone villages, with wineries and cellar-door tastings along the way. It’s a slower, more meandering drive best done without a strict schedule.
Cape Greco coastal drive
The short loop road around Cape Greco National Forest Park near Ayia Napa delivers constant sea views, sea arches and cliff-top pull-offs, and pairs naturally with a stop at Konnos Bay for a swim partway round.
The Limassol to Platres climb
The B8 out of Limassol is a scenic drive in its own right, not just a route to somewhere else — vineyard terraces give way to pine forest as you climb, with several viewpoints looking back down toward the coast.
The Paphos to Polis coast road
Following the northwest coastline past Coral Bay toward Polis and Latchi, this route mixes sea views with rolling countryside and is far quieter than the busier roads around Paphos town itself.
Tips for scenic driving in Cyprus
- Early morning light is best for coastal routes — the sea’s colour is more vivid and traffic is minimal.
- Mountain routes are best avoided in the low winter light of late afternoon, when sun glare on the bends can be sharp.
- Pack a picnic — many of the best viewpoints on these routes have no cafés nearby, just a place to pull over.
- An SUV opens up the rougher sections (Akamas in particular) that a standard car would need to skip.
